Malcolm Lim – Percussion
Malcolm Lim (Singapore-born) studied orchestral percussion at McGill University and L’Universite de Montreal. With the support of the Alberta Foundation and the Canada Council, he has enhanced his training in New York City and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His teachers include Pierre Beluse, D’Arcy Gray, and Louis Charbonneau (Orchestral percussion), Paul Walker (drum set), Glen Velez (frame drums), Michel Mirhige (Arabic percussion), Marcos Suzanno (Brazilian
percussion), Alessandra Belloni (Italian percussion), and Trichy Sankaran (S. Indian percussion). Mr. Lim has performed with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Calgary Opera, and the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra. He has taught at the Escola de Musica of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the Federal University of Bahia (Brazil), the University of Lethbridge, Augustana University College, Red Deer College Conservatory, and The Banff Centre for the Arts. Malcolm has published several articles in Percussive Notes, the journal of the Percussive Arts Society. His work has been broadcast on CBC. Malcolm is exploring the intersection of music, the martial arts, and leadership and has worked at The Banff Centre Leadership Development as creative faculty since 2002.
Kayami Satomi – Cello
Kayami Satomi is a renowned Brazilian cellist with a solid musical background. Born into a family of musicians, he began studying at the age of four under the guidance of his mother, Alice Lumi Satomi. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Music from the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) and later completed his Master’s degree at the University of Music in Münster, Germany, graduating with the highest distinction as a Yehudi Menuhin Foundation scholar. His career is
marked by awards in national competitions and appearances at prestigious music festivals in more than 15 countries worldwide. He has studied with acclaimed teachers such as Nelson Campos, Felipe Aquino, and Matias de Oliveira Pinto, and has participated in festivals and masterclasses with distinguished musicians including Antonio Meneses and Colin Carr. As a soloist, Kayami has performed with several orchestras, among them the Humboldt University Philharmonic Orchestra in Berlin. He is currently a cello professor at the Villa-Lobos Institute of UNIRIO.
Annette-Barbara – Violin
Annette-Barbara Vogel’s rich international performing career has featured her as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician in over 35 countries across 6 continents. She is renowned for her “authoritative and highly sensitive performances,” and “formidable technique, stunning musicality, and stage presence that transmits to orchestra and audience alike.” Gramophone Magazine has lauded “Vogel’s perfect intonation,” while Classical CD Review has proclaimed her
“the most ideal exponent a composer could hope for.” Vogel’s prolific recording career as soloist and chamber musician has produced more than fifteen commercial albums under Avie Records, Bluegriffin Recordings, Cybele Records, Eroica Classical Records, and Harmonia Mundi Germany. Her 2011 release of “Französische Komponistinnen” received the British IRR Outstanding Recording Award. Her exceptional musicianship has been recognized by numerous prestigious solo prizes and scholarships across both Europe and North America. Currently a Full Professor, Vogel accepted her appointment at Western University in 2004, where she continues to serve as the head of the string area and is in high demand as a pedagogue and chamber music coach.
Vladimir Rufino – Violin
Brazilian-Canadian violinist Vladimir Rufino has performed across South America, Europe, Canada, and the United States. He holds a Doctor of Music from the University of Alberta, a Master of Music and Artist Certificate from Azusa Pacific University, and a Bachelor of Music from the Universidade Federal da Paraíba, studying with Yerko Pinto Tabilo and Charles Stegeman. Rufino has appeared as soloist, concertmaster, and assistant concertmaster with orchestras in
Brazil, the U.S., and Canada. A passionate chamber musician, he has toured internationally with Quartet Quarta Dimensão, Camerata Brasílica, the Villa-Lobos String Quartet, and the Vaughan String Quartet. Dedicated to Brazilian repertoire, he has performed and recorded works by leading composers from his home country. Based in Edmonton, he performs as a violinist of the Vaughan String Quartet and the Brilho Trio. He also adjudicates at festivals and teaches at the
Mount Royal University Conservatory of Music and recently signed with the classical label Azul Music.
Fabiola Amorim – Viola
Violist Fabiola Amorim holds a Doctor of Music degree from the University of Alberta (Canada), a Master of Music and an Artist Certificate from Azusa Pacific University (USA), and a Bachelor of Music from the Universidade Federal da Paraíba (Brazil). Her 2018 doctoral thesis, Echoes of the Brazilian Nationalism Movement in Four Works for Viola and Piano (1950–82), has become a reference for scholars researching Brazilian repertoire for viola. Amorim has appeared as principal violist and soloist with orchestras in Brazil, the United States, and Canada. An avid chamber musician, she has been a member of Camerata Brasílica (Brazil) and the Villa-Lobos String Quartet (USA), and is a founding member of both the Vaughan String Quartet and the Brilho Trio, with which she has performed across Canada, the United States, France, and Italy. Her recordings are released under the classical label Azul Music. Equally dedicated to performance and education, Dr. Amorim maintains an active career as a concert violist, teaches at the Mount Royal University Conservatory of Music, and regularly serves as an adjudicator for festivals and competitions in Alberta.
